REBT is Rational emotive behavior therapy. This style of Therapy was created by Albert Ellis in 1955. REBT mainly focuses on what thinking leads a person to have emotional or behavioral distress.
Albert Ellis Said there are three “must” that hold us back:
- I must do well
- You must treat me well
- The world must be easy.
From this, there are demands that a person holds on ourselves, the situation, and others. This is extremely important in REBT because if we can reshape the demands in to unconditional acceptance on ourselves, others, and the situation than it can lead to more happiness.
REBT focuses mostly on what is happening now. What unhealthy emotions are being held on to and what irrational believes are occurring. If you have addictive behaviors, unhealthy habits, impossibly high expectations, it is bound to lead to emotional distress. REBT uses many methods to reform and dispute your thoughts to help form a way of living that gives you more satisfaction.
To many people, Self-defeating thoughts are common. These thoughts are likely to cause a person to have a great deal of stress, anxiety, guilt, and depression. It is our goal to help a person see their value and self worth through practicing REBT.
Albert Ellis (2003) “REBT holds that ideas and feelings about self-worth are largely definition and are not empirically comfortable or falsifiable.”
